A Socioeconomic Analysis of Dublins South West Inner City

Crime rates are more than twice the national average, with recorded crime also rising sharply since 2023, particularly public order and serious offences.
Educational outcomes remain significantly below average. Just 36% of Leaving Certificate students in local schools progressed to third-level education in 2024, compared with around 80% nationally.
Many families face significant socioeconomic challenges. Almost half of those living in the most severely deprived parts of Dublin’s inner city live within the SWIC, while average household incomes are around 15–16% below the Dublin average.
Drug-related harm is a major issue. The area has a high concentration of addiction services, while drug-poisoning deaths per capita are estimated to be at least twice the national average.
Young people have limited opportunities to be physically active. Only 22% of primary pupils and 8% of secondary pupils meet national physical activity guidelines, with a significant shortage of accessible public sports facilities in the area.
Sporting Liberties is a not-for-profit organisation which has been campaigning for over a decade to address the severe lack of green and recreational space for children in Dublin’s South West Inner City.
In the SWIC and immediate surrounding area, home to 50,000 residents—including 8,500 children—there isn’t a single green area for organised sport. The area faces serious challenges such as drug-related crime, high suicide rates among young females, and a disproportionate number of residents in the criminal justice system.
Sporting Liberties believes that providing sports facilities is vital to improving children's quality of life and deterring them from crime. The organisation has long advocated for pitches at St. Teresa’s Gardens and the Marrowbone Lane depot. Encouragingly, Dublin City Council has now committed to both sites.
However, timely delivery remains a concern. While continuing to push for these developments, Sporting Liberties is also seeking existing community spaces for physical and cultural activities.
